Functions of Art, Culture and Language Department
The Art, Culture and Language Department, being the Administrative Department controls & coordinates the activities of various language Academies, Dr. Goswami Girdhari Lal Shastri Prachya Vidya Prastishthanam, Sahitya Kala Parishad, Archives Department and Archaeology Department. It also processes & sanctions the grant-in-aid to these autonomous bodies and Departments.
The Department through its Language Academies, Dr. Goswami Girdhari Lal Shastri Prachya Vidya Pratishthanam & Sahitya Kala Parishad has been organizing a series of literary and cultural programmes.
Implementation of “The Delhi Official languages Act – 2000”.
To increase the progressive use of Hindi in the Departments of Govt. of NCT of Delhi, Department organizes Hindi workshops in different Departments of Govt. of NCT of Delhi.
Hindi Competitions like Hindi Good Handwriting, Essay, Noting-Drafting, Typing and Shorthand in which Officers/Officials of the offices under Govt. of NCT of Delhi participates are also organized. Further, Awards to the successful participants are also distributed.
The Translation work of various departmental notifications, circulars etc. in Hindi Languages are carried out.
The department provides Grant-in-Aid to NGO’s for opening and running Libraries in different Assembly Constituencies.
Grant-in-Aid to Lal Bahadur Shashtri Sewa Niketan (NGO) for a library under the scheme Grant in Aid to Cultural Institutions (State Scheme).
Promotion of official language and second official languages.
Implementation of Various State Schemes.
Recognizing the importance of language education, the Punjabi Academy appointed 122 (47-TGT & 75- Primary Teachers) Punjabi language Teachers last year in schools run by the Delhi Government and MCD Schools.
To promote reading habits among the masses, the Punjabi Academy operates 42 Composite Libraries in slums and JJ colonies across Delhi, offering free access to daily newspapers, magazines in Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, and English, as well as books, to the underprivileged sections of society.
Hindi Academy runs 13 Hindi Prasar Kendras & 2 Hindi Ashulipik evam Tankan (typing) Prashikshan Kendra for Hindi shorthand and computer training.
Through Archives Department - Survey, acquisition and proper preservation of cultural heritage of Delhi in the shape of documents, manuscripts, rare books, maps and others records/materials for the administrative use as well as for historical research purposes through Delhi Archives. It also provides centralization, proper housing, preservation, maintenance and servicing of all 25 years old records of permanent nature belonging to offices/departments of Government of NCT of Delhi.
Through Archaeology Department - Conservation and protection of lesser known monuments of local importance which are other than those of national importance under the jurisdiction of Archaeological Survey of India, Govt. of India & have no significant history attached to them in a phased manner under the provisions of its DAHMASR Act, 2004.
